Sancaklar Mosque

Acting as a leader in building places of worship in places of need, Sancaklar Foundation has given the nation a work with architecture awards with its latest project, Sancaklar Mosque. With the construction started at Büyükçekmece, İstanbul in 2012, this mosque with a capacity of 650 people was designed by the architect Emre Arolat with special care to keep in line with the non-ostentatiousness, simplicity and modesty in the essence of Islam. Its rectangular minaret, lighting comprising of LED lights and daylight emanating from the altar wall, its gradated rows, the slate and basalt stones used in its construction, the conscious choice to avoid use of chemical paints, and its inclined ground giving the impression of being underground separate the Sancaklar Mosque from other religious buildings. With its rich library Sancaklar Mosque is not only a place of worship, but also a social meeting point where the community can read, learn and share their ideas. Sancaklar Mosque has won the "Project of the Future" award in the World Architecture Festival organised in Barcelona in 2011, and the World 1st award in religious buildings category in the World Architecture Festival organised in Singapore in 2013.
